Roman Medicine:
In terms of their health, Romans preferred the approach of preventing illness rather than curing them. It was through the wars in which Roman medicine prospered. The Empires conquests brought forth the arrival of slaves, some were Greek Doctors who were commonly brought by wealthy families who showed interest towards this practice. Hands on experiences and surgical skills were developed by Roman doctors who treated the wounds of soldiers and gladiators. The role of doctors were strictly for men while women practiced in herbal medicine and midwifery. Doctoral treatments were only given to those who could afford it, this means that the poor (plebeians) and even slaves must have relied on herbal cures or had to seek assistance from the divines. Conclusion:
The surgical kit that had been preserved by the eruption firstly shows us what the level of medical practices were in the Pompeian society. Secondly the types of tools present illustrates the forms of medial conditions and procedures that the Roman doctors had to deal with. Lastly due to their unique preservation, reasearchers have been able to identify the designs of these ancient surgical instruments as being of a similar style to the surgical instruments used today in the modern era. |
